DROMEDARII IN NOVA EBORACUM — LA CARAVANA DEL TIEMPO

No fue un viaje. Fue una fractura. Un segundo en el que el polvo del desierto se mezcló con el humo de los taxis, y la arena de Arabia Petraea se posó sobre el asfalto de la Quinta Avenida.

Los Dromedarii —guardianes del límite oriental del Imperio— aparecieron entre los rascacielos como si el tiempo hubiera decidido rendirse. Seis, siete figuras sobre camellos cubiertos de cuero y polvo, avanzando entre el tráfico de Nueva York con la misma calma con la que cruzaban las dunas de Petra.

El primero, en primer plano, lleva el rostro curtido por el sol y la mirada fija en el horizonte. Su montura levanta una nube de arena que no debería existir allí, pero que el viento urbano acepta sin resistencia. Detrás, el estandarte LEG XXI VETVSTA VICTRIX ondea, raído, polvoriento, pero invicto. Un símbolo que ha sobrevivido veinte siglos y ahora flota entre neones y escaparates.

Los neoyorquinos se detienen. Los turistas levantan sus cámaras. Dos policías del NYPD, con sus gorras negras y su incredulidad contenida, observan sin saber si están presenciando una película o una revelación. El ruido de la ciudad se atenúa. Solo se escucha el paso de los camellos y el eco de Roma resonando entre los edificios.

El sol cae entre los rascacielos, bañando la escena en oro y polvo. Los primeros neones despiertan, y en el reflejo de un escaparate aparece la inscripción: “VETUSTA VICTRIX in NOVA EBORACUM” como si la ciudad misma reconociera la llegada del Imperio.

No hay invasión. No hay conquista. Solo presencia. Roma no regresa para dominar, sino para recordar. Para decirle al mundo moderno que la historia no se borra, solo cambia de escenario.

Y allí, entre taxis y turistas, la caravana sigue avanzando, como si el desierto aún la acompañara, como si el tiempo fuera su aliado, como si cada paso fuera una oración.

It wasn’t a journey. It was a fracture. A single second in which desert dust mixed with taxi exhaust, and the sand of Arabia Petraea settled over the asphalt of Fifth Avenue. The Dromedarii — guardians of the Empire’s eastern frontier — appeared among the skyscrapers as if time itself had surrendered. Six, seven figures atop camels clad in leather and dust, moving through New York traffic with the same calm with which they once crossed the dunes of Petra.

The first one, in the foreground, bears a face carved by the sun and eyes fixed on the horizon. His mount lifts a cloud of sand that should not exist there, yet the urban wind accepts it without resistance. Behind him, the standard LEG XXI VETVSTA VICTRIX waves — frayed, dusty, but undefeated. A symbol that has survived twenty centuries and now floats between neon lights and storefronts.

New Yorkers stop. Tourists raise their cameras. Two NYPD officers, with their black caps and barely contained disbelief, watch without knowing whether they are witnessing a film or a revelation. The city noise fades. Only the steps of the camels remain, and the echo of Rome resonating between the buildings.

The sun sinks between the skyscrapers, bathing the scene in gold and dust. The first neon signs awaken, and in the reflection of a shop window appears the inscription: “VETUSTA VICTRIX in NOVA EBORACUM” as if the city itself acknowledged the arrival of the Empire.

There is no invasion. No conquest. Only presence. Rome does not return to dominate, but to remind. To tell the modern world that history is never erased — it merely changes its stage.

And there, between taxis and tourists, the caravan continues forward, as if the desert still accompanied it, as if time were its ally, as if every step were a prayer.
