Una patrulla de dromedarii auxiliares avanza en diagonal, rompiendo el polvo leve que flota sobre el suelo caliente. No marchan en formación perfecta: se desplazan como lo exige Arabia, como lo dicta la supervivencia, como lo ordena la frontera.
El primero surge en primer plano, elevado sobre su camello. No se ve el animal entero: solo el morro sudado, la espuma en la boca, las riendas tensas, los bultos de agua y mantas golpeando con el paso. El legionario, tostado por el sol, sudado, cubierto de polvo, mira hacia abajo, directamente al intruso que se cruza en su camino. No grita. No alza el arma. Solo observa, juzga, decide. Su mirada es una advertencia.
Detrás de él, dos hombres avanzan cercanos, cada uno con turbantes distintos: blanco, rojo, azul, arena. Más atrás, uno marcha solo; otro lo sigue; y tres cierran la patrulla, envueltos en telas que cubren boca y nariz, dejando solo los ojos visibles. Son romanos, pero no uniformes. Son soldados, pero no de desfile. Son hombres de frontera, moldeados por el calor, la arena y la distancia.
En el tercer camello ondea el estandarte VETUSTA VICTRIX LEG XXI, raído, quemado por el sol, desgarrado por el viento del desierto. No es un símbolo de conquista: es un recordatorio de que Roma también sangra, también resiste, también se adapta.
Petra, al fondo, se alza como un templo eterno. Su fachada, recortada por la luz roja del ocaso, observa en silencio el paso de la patrulla. Columnas erosionadas, escaleras talladas en la roca, inscripciones nabateas casi borradas por el tiempo. Todo permanece. Todo vigila.

ARABIA PETRAEA

The desert opens like a red wound beneath the last sun of the day. The sacred stone of Petra burns in silence, lit by a sunset that turns sand into liquid gold and shadows into judgment. Nothing moves… except them.
A patrol of auxiliary dromedarii advances diagonally, breaking the thin dust floating above the hot ground. They do not march in perfect formation: they move as Arabia demands, as survival dictates, as the frontier commands.
The first emerges in the foreground, elevated on his camel. The animal is not fully visible — only the sweating muzzle, the foam at the mouth, the taut reins, the bundles of water and blankets swaying with each step. The legionary, sun-scorched, sweating, covered in dust, looks down directly at the intruder crossing his path. He does not shout. He does not raise his weapon. He only watches, judges, decides. His gaze is a warning.
Behind him, two men advance close together, each wearing different turbans: white, red, blue, sand. Further back, one marches alone; another follows; and three close the patrol, wrapped in cloth covering mouth and nose, leaving only their eyes visible. They are Romans, but not uniform. They are soldiers, but not parade soldiers. They are frontier men, shaped by heat, sand, and distance.
On the third camel flies the standard VETUSTA VICTRIX LEG XXI, tattered, sun-scorched, torn by the desert wind. It is not a symbol of conquest: it is a reminder that Rome also bleeds, also endures, also adapts.
Petra, in the background, rises like an eternal temple. Its facade, framed by the red light of dusk, silently watches the patrol pass. Eroded columns, stairs carved into rock, Nabataean inscriptions nearly erased by time. Everything remains. Everything watches.
And between stone and sand, between dust and light, the patrol advances. They seek no glory. They seek no war. They only fulfill their duty at the edge of the world.
